Jamie Dobson says he’s always been a maker. Before school age his grandfather bought him tools and taught him how to sharpen chisels. He made aeroplanes, rockets and trucks from firewood and scraps. He has spent his working life to date as a designer and academic – the last 15 years as a professor of design education and graphic design lecturer. Before this as an architectural lighting designer contributing to projects like the Millennium Dome and ‘The Gherkin’, (Also involved in three Stirling Architecture Prize winning projects, and a gold award at the Cannes Lions Advertising Festival – stories for another time).

Chopping Board
This end-grain chopping board is made from iroko, salvaged from science lab benches during a Norfolk school refurbishment, with walnut, cherry, maple and mahogany adding contrast. Stripped back and carefully reworked, it shows the iroko’s warm, golden-brown tone against darker and paler notes from the companion woods. Dense, stable, and kind to knife edges, it carries quiet traces of its past life. Built for everyday use, this board is one of a kind.
