RICHARD McVETIS: SHAPED BY TIME

Richard McVetis describes his work as ‘an endless exploration, not just of form but of the reclamation and potential of process and repetition – a step-by-step examination of perspective and scale which unearths the human condition’. A range of materials are used through his labour-intensive process which uses hand-embroidery to record time through multiples of dots, lines and crosses.

Selected works explore the mapping of space and marking of time as a central theme. Variations Of A Stitched Cube, a series of hand-embroidered cubes based on the composite number sixty and the systems in which we measure time. The cubes show time, an ever-present invisible force, through form as both logical and playful. Defined by their materials and created through the random process of embroidery and the action of the hand, generating variations with self-imposed restrictions to imply and manifest the passage of time.

McVetis was a finalist in the 2018 Loewe Craft Prize and has exhibited his work internationally. He is a member of the renowned 62 Group of Textile Artists.
